The aNvkai Tree season 2 premiered last night with an episode entitled “Integrity- Do you know what the hell it is?” The episode delves into the concept of integrity in communities of color and how we bring that into our politics, art, commerce. We talk about the ideas of selling out vs. buying in and what that means in the context of celebrity. We also touch lack of diversity in children’s book and what that means for the future of literature. Listen below or look up on apple podcast and spotify.

3 plastic free disposable utensil brands

Recycling in the the united states has been on the decline on an industrial level for a few years now. Mainly because countries like China and Indonesia aren’t buying our recyclable materials like they used to. So it falls on us the consumer to reduce our plastic consumption and maybe the corporations will reduce the amount they produce.

World Centric

World Centric was founded in 2004 to raise awareness of large-scale humanitarian and environmental issues and how our pursuit of a good life was severely degrading the planet’s ecosystems and at the same time creating vast inequalities where 2.5 billion people live on less than $2/day, without access to basic necessities such as adequate food, water, healthcare, education, housing, sanitation etc. We started by hosting award-winning documentaries and speakers on environmental, social, human rights and peace issues, offered courses on sustainability, simple living, and globalization and started to work on a Conscious Living guide. World Centric is based in California and sells a vary of products at super markets all around the country. Such as knifes, spoons, plates, and coffee cups. You can check their website https://www.worldcentric.com/ their products are also available on amazon and target.

Repurpose is another California based brand of plastic free picnicware. Repurpose is the newest kid on the block and although it is not as readily available in stores as some other brands I find their general price point to be lower and their quality to be higher. The plates and cups are great for parties or events. AND THEY MAKE STRAWS!!! So if you have kids or love straws but worried about the environmental, worry no more. http://www.repurposecompostables.com/shop

Vaneerware by Bambu

What the F*#% do I do with all these jars?

If you’re anything like me, a trend whore… Then when the mason jar wave hit about two years ago you probably went a little overboard. Now your looking at kitchen cabinet that’s over flowing with glass prisons, thinking to yourself “why the fuck did I buy all these?” The novelty of using them as fun drinking glasses has long since worn off. And if you take one more jar of overnight oats to work your going to hang yourself with a quaker hat! Presented for your approval are few different ways you can put those jars to use.

Pickled Pepper Mangos are a common snack found all over the caribbean and parts of Mexico. I personally hate mango but there’s something about pickled mango that just does it for me! You can eat them alone, put them on kabobs, in salads, tacos and tons of other sweet and savory dishes.

First you want find a few mangos that are just under ripe (mean they’re still a little hard to the touch) 2-3 should do the trick depending on the size of your jar. You want to peel them and cut them up like so,

The Brine

in mason jar of any size combine the following

  • 1/2 cup of kosher salt
  • 1 tps Cheyenne pepper
  • 1/2 tps black pepper
  • 1 tps red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 tbs cumin
  • 1-3 cups apple cider vinegar (depending on the side of the jar)

Close the mason jar and shake until on the salt is dissolved reopen and add in mango slices. Seal the jar a refrigerate for four days minimum before serving.

Microwave cake

You’ve been eating overnight oat and heaven only knows what gods awful concoction of juiced greens all winter, it’s time to treat yo self bitch. Who says you can bring cake for lunch at work? I mean as long as it’s discreet…

Microwave or mug cake is super easy and dumb good! And if you put it in jar it’s simple to pick up and take to work for lunch or out on a picnic.

  • Cooking spray, such as PAM Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
  • 2 cups whipped cream,
  • 1/4 cup eggs
  • 1/2 cup dry devil’s food cake mix with pudding in mix
  • 2 tablespoons caramel flavored syrup
  • 3 mini twist pretzels, crushed

Spray insides of 2 large microwave-safe mugs with cooking spray. Whisk together whip cream, eggs, and cake mix in medium bowl. Place half of batter in each mug.

Microwave each mug individually on high for 1 minute to 1 minute 15 seconds or until set. Invert each cake onto plate. Top with caramel syrup and sprinkle with crushed pretzels. Serve immediately with additional whip cream, if desired.

Cumin seeds/Geera

Lastly I use small jars for storing fresh spices and seasonings. I make my own cumin from geera/jeera seeds because cumin tends to get stale pretty quickly the seeds stay fresher longer than the ground powder.

The Secret life of dumplings

When I think of comfort food I think of something warm, filling, and easy to make. I was trying to think of my favorite and many things come to mind, Mac & Cheese, Soup, pasta and butter sauce. There’s one comfort food that cuts across many cultures, dumplings bitch! I love me some dumplings, from anywhere but for those of you who don’t know I’m about to school you!

Now if you’re like me and grew up with a southern family then you grew up with these:

Southern Chicken and dumplings

Chicken and dumplings is a staple southern comfort food. It’s creamy, it’s filling, and has a unique mild flavor that’s great for winter meal. Now I haven’t had this dish in years! Mostly because after grandmother passed there was no one that could make quite like she could. But this recipe is a great close second https://www.southernliving.com/recipes/old-fashioned-chicken-dumplings-recipe

Another variation on this recipe is with backbone (pork riblet) which is a little harder and tangy. I’ve made this recipe myself and it’s amazing!

Dumpling with backbone

Here’s the website for the recipe http://www.tasteofsouthern.com/backbone-and-dumplings/

We definitely cannot talk about dumpling with talking about asian dumplings. Whether steamed or fried, Chinese or Korean we’ve all had these and I can’t get enough them. They come with various filling from pork to shrimp or vegetables depending on which region of asian we’re talking about.

Asian Dumplings

This is my personal recipe for asian shrimp dumplings

Last be definitely not least is my personal favorite Trinidadian dumplings with Oxtail. Trinidadian dumplings are closer to what American’s call biscuits. They’re light, fluffy and delicious, along with the stewed Ox-tail it’s a meal that will fill you up and never let you down. It’s a little spicy but that never hurt nobody!

This recipe is a process but it’s well worth it! https://www.today.com/recipes/oxtail-stew-dumplings-t20031

I encourage everyone to try these various recipes and share your experience in the comments!

OP- The Unraveling of America

I think I’ve tried to write this piece about ten or fifteen times in the past two weeks. There are many layers and nuances to the conversation, thousands of variables and millions of lives in the balance. Each time I’ve sat down to write it’s just become a clusterfuck of thoughts and emotions. Finally this morning I just though to myself “fuck it!” . It needs to be said and whether I’m right or wrong, I want at the very least to be honest. The United States is falling apart.

Firstly this is not piece where I intent to blame all the countries woes and short comings on the election of Donald Trump to the presidency. If we are to have this conversation in earnest we can not look at the United States a-historically. That is to say, like every story America has a beginning, middle and ultimately an ending. I’d like to focus on the beginning for moment, because that is what makes America so different than the eastern part of the world and the histories therein.

So in the 1400’s Christopher Columbus and a rag tag band of European convicts and hustlers, where shipped off by the king and queen of Spain to find a new route to Indian by sea. This of course was death mission in disguise. Columbus was a known con-man all over Europe and had pretty much become a public nuisance. In my mind Ferdinand and Isabella were like fuck it! Let’s get him and these other derelicts out of our hair. At if actually finds a new route great, if he dies even better. Anyway somehow these fools end up in the eastern hemisphere and it’s the beginning of the end for everyone who isn’t white. There began a centuries long apologue of bloody genocide, slavery, war, and over consumption of recourses.

The foundations of America are important and relevant to its current state for many reasons. Chiefly that it has always been a nation that proclaimed “All men are created equal and free.” But the stark contradiction of America’s reality is, that the only men who were equal and free FOR CENTURIES!!!!!!! Where white men. And you can except to build a lasting sovereign nation of slavery and lies. Let’s be real America had two centuries of chattel slavery, followed by Jim crow laws, segregation, and the disproportionate mass incarceration of peoples of African decent. All of which took place without a national point of healing or momentary reparations. That was bad nation building strike 1. Strike 2, the United States had never prioritized women or children. In health care, education or pay for work. Strike 3, we haven’t stopped warring since WWII. American ended it’s long period of isolationism by entering into WWII and since then we’ve always been engaged in some type of conflict aboard. which lives little money and resources for infrastructure and social investment. I say all this to say, when a foundation is shitty (at best) what’s built upon it will never actually be stable.

In the present American has basically become oligarchy, corporations are people; who matter more than people who aren’t corporations. The corporate capitalist machine and it’s interest control America. The middle class has basically become walking piggy banks for bail outs when the real citizen can’t pay their bills. As we speak Michael Cohen is singing like the Harlem Boys choirs to congress about how horrible of person is sitting in the oval office. But I digress, Donald Trump is a symptom of American’s sickness not the disease. Although I have a theory that the Russians gave him the money to bribe the electoral college, win the election and destabilize the country. But that’s just a shot in the dark.

In order for America not to unravel I feel it must atone for its past sin and heal to move forward but American hasn’t even been to church.
